Women’s Soccer at the Paris Olympics: Everything You Need to Know

We’ve reached July, which means that the Paris Olympics are just a couple of weeks away. The opening ceremony will be held on Friday, July 26, and the games will run until August 11. Below, we give you everything you need to know about women’s soccer at the Paris Olympics. 

 

Past Olympic Women’s Soccer Tournaments

Canada won the Gold Medal at the 2020 Olympics, with Sweden getting silver and the USWNT taking home bronze. Only three countries in the 2024 Olympics have ever won a Gold Medal in women’s soccer: the United States, Canada, and Germany.

The USWNT has won four Olympic tournaments since women’s soccer started at the Games in 1996, which they earned in 1996, 2004, 2008, and 2012. 

 

Olympic Women’s Soccer Tournament Schedule

The women’s soccer tournament at the Paris Olympics begins before the opening ceremony, and the first day of matches takes place on Thursday, July 25. There are three groups for the women’s soccer tournament at the Olympics. They are: 

  • Group A
    • France
    • Colombia
    • Canada
    • New Zealand
  • Group B
    • United States
    • Zambia
    • Germany
    • Australia
  • Group C
    • Spain
    • Japan
    • Nigeria
    • Brazil

The group stage will run until July 31, with each team playing three matches. Every team will begin on July 25. Then, they will play again on July 28 and July 31. The top two teams and the two best third-place teams in each group will advance to the quarterfinals.  

All four quarter-final matches will take place on August 3 at 9 AM, 11 AM, 1 PM, and 3 PM ET. The two semifinal games will be on August 6 at 12 and 3 PM, and the third-place game will be on August 9 at 9 AM ET. The Gold Medal match will take place on August 10 at 11 AM ET. 

 

Where To Watch Women’s Soccer in the Olympics?

The exact TV and streaming details of each match haven’t been released yet, but NBC has broadcast rights to the Paris Olympics. Each game will be available to watch on either NBC or USA Network, as well as streaming on Peacock. 

 

Weather at the Paris Games

 

It is currently summertime in Paris, and temperatures could be quite hot and humid during the games. The Olympic committee reported that the average temperature during July and August is between 59°F and 77°F

 

What Cities Will Olympic Women’s Soccer Take Place in?

The women’s soccer tournament will be played across seven different venues in France. Games will be held in Paris, Nantes, Bordeaux, Lyon, Saint-Etienne, Marseille, and Nice. Paris at Parc de Princes will host the Gold Medal match. The USWNT will play their group-stage matches in Nice and Marseille.
