Top 5 Goals: NWSL Challenge Cup, FA WSL

It truly is a great time to be a women’s soccer fan with many different leagues currently in action. The Challenge Cup and FA WSL have been reaching a fever pitch with so much at stake. Considering what’s on the line, the quality of goals was outstanding. Let’s take a closer look at the best women’s soccer goals of the week from the NWSL Challenge Cup and FA WSL.

5. Debinha – North Carolina Courage

The Courage just missed out on the top spot in the East division. Debinha did everything she could to lift her team to victory. Is there anything left to say about Debinha other than she’s an MVP candidate? The Brazilian is always looking to score. Notice her movement and how she gradually drifts into the box before the ball comes to her. All it takes is one touch and bang! Before you know it the ball is in the top corner, she’s just that good.

4. Mallory Pugh – Chicago Red Stars

Mallory Pugh fans were surely rejoicing after seeing her score for Chicago. This is the player we are all used to seeing. Once she gets the ball and sees an inch of daylight she’s going for it, regardless of which defenders are in the area. Pugh did well to work off the back of her defender during the throw-in. In a split second, she has the ball and takes a couple of steps before cutting inside and bending it into the far corner. This was some vintage Mallory Pugh. Hopefully, she’s here to stay.

3. Kristie Mewis – Houston Dash

Kristie Mewis is on another level right now for the Houston Dash – everything she touches turns to gold. Where Mewis was when she received the ball and the angle she had to take the shot makes the finis all the more impressive. Mewis was able to generate so much power without much of a runup into her shot – no easy task. Nicole Barnhart is a solid keeper but even she couldn’t do a thing about this goal.

2. Vivianne Miedema – Arsenal

Vivianne Miedema is too good of a player to be given this much space in and around the box. It might not have seemed like a threatening position immediately, but Miedema turned this into an opportunity very quickly. Defenders tried to get her off the ball, but they were feeble attempts at best. Watch how Miedema plants her foot in the ground to turn her body and wrap her foot around the shot. It’s a world-class technique from a world-class player. Simply unstoppable.

1. Tziarra King – OL Reign

No matter where she goes, it’s clear that Tziarra King is going to make an impact. Having already provided an assist earlier in the match, it was King’s turn to get on the scoresheet. Not many players would’ve tried to shoot from such an angle but that’s what makes King different. She picked her head up and ripped the shot toward the far post. It curled and clanged in off the post. It was a swift move overall from the OL Reign and King figures to be a big part of this team moving forward.
