This week, the USWNT gained some confidence back, more women’s soccer attendance and ticket sales records were set, and news broke about the treatment of pregnant women playing pro soccer. So, without further ado, here’s this week’s women’s soccer news.
High of the Weekend
The USWNT won both their games down under this week, giving the team and fans a much-needed confidence boost after last fall’s losses.
Lynn Williams’s return was especially exciting after she barely played for the Current last season following hamstring surgery. She scored a goal in the first game.
Also, it was a record home crowd for the Football Ferns!
Low of the Weekend
This story is bigger than me! It’s a wake up call for all clubs and it’s a message to all players that if they get pregnant or want to get pregnant during their career they have their rights and guarantees!@PlayersTribune @FIFPRO https://t.co/Rnzj7lua9g

Becoming a mother while still having a pro football career is something that doesn’t get talked about a lot. The Players’ Tribune released a story by Sara Björk Gunnarsdóttir about when she played for Lyon and became pregnant.
The story goes into how the club didn’t support her and made their negative opinion of her pregnancy known to her. It’s shocking to hear that mothers receive nearly no protection regarding their soccer careers.
Clearly, something needs to change, as we’ve heard a similar story from Alex Morgan and her child not being supported by U.S. Soccer.
News of the Weekend
500,000 tickets sold and counting 🎟
FIFA has revealed that more than half-a-million tickets have been sold to fans across 120+ countries for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup! 🏆 pic.twitter.com/BU1enYcGeo

The ticket sales for the Women’s World Cup this year have been record-breaking, at over half a million sold.
There have been talks about changing to different stadiums to up the capacity… which seems like something that should have been considered in the first place with all of the attendance records that women’s soccer has broken this year…
Fail of the Weekend
— frankirbydaily (@frankirbydaily) January 23, 2023
This is a strange one. The Chelsea vs. Liverpool match was called off six minutes in after players were slipping and sliding on an icy pitch. Why wasn’t the game canceled before the whistle, and why is a pitch getting iced over in the first place? These questions need to be addressed to protect players from getting injured.
Win of the Weekend
Congratulations to Wales women's national team players who will now be paid equally as the men’s team for the first time after a landmark agreement was reached with the Football Association of Wales.#LadiesInSports #EqualPay pic.twitter.com/xtSWgbhYhh

On the equal pay front, the Wales women’s national team just agreed to receive equal pay as the men’s side!

Orlando Pride’s Darian Jenkins announced her retirement from pro soccer last week. Jenkins was drafted in the 2017 NWSL draft after a successful career at UCLA.

More in Angel City news, a trade was made with the NC Courage. Defender Merritt Mathias is headed to LA, and forward Tyler Lussi is headed to Cary. Both teams get what they need: ACFC is looking for an outside back, and NC Courage is looking to gain an attacking edge after losing Debinha and Diana Ordonez.
