FootyPop: Rebekah Stott Returns for New Zealand

This week there was a remarkable return to the game, Chicago finally got a head coach, and the USWNT had their first game of 2022. So, without further ado, here’s this week’s women’s soccer news. 

 

High of the Week 

Less than a year after being diagnosed with stage three Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Rebekah Stott made her return to the international stage. In the 74th minute for New Zealand, she came off the bench, marking an extraordinary moment. 

 

News of the Week

The Chicago Red Stars finally have a new head coach. The club announced the hiring of Chris Petrucelli, who spent the last nine years in the college ranks at Southern Methodist University. 

 

Low of the Week

The USWNT returned to action in the first game of the SheBelieves Cup, but they looked a bit rusty. The game against the Czech Republic finished in a 0-0 tie. They struggled in the attacking third and weren’t sharp with their finishing. However, Star youngster Trinity Rodman did make her senior team debut in the draw. 

 

Player of the Week 

The USWNT game against the Czech Republic marked Becky Sauerbrunn’s 200th appearance for the Stars and Stripes. She became the 12th player in USWNT history to reach that milestone. 

 

Goal of the Week

Janine Beckie scored a terrific shot into the top corner to help Canada get a 1-1 draw against England.
