The NWSL is officially back with the 2022 Challenge Cup getting started this weekend. This week the FA took a big step, some great NWSL play, and new jerseys were released. Hereโ€™s this week’s womenโ€™s soccer news.ย

The FA confirmed this week that the prize money for the Womenโ€™s FA Cup will increase from ยฃ428,915 to ยฃ3 million. Itโ€™s another step in the right direction to getting the womenโ€™s game equal.ย 

 

Low of the Week

The Portland Thorns announced that USWNT defender Becky Sauerbrunn had undergone surgery to fix a torn meniscus. Sheโ€™ll miss out on the Challenge Cup but should be back in time for the regular season.ย 

 

News of the Week

The start of the Challenge Cup also means new kits, the Portland Thorns and Washington Spirit released their 2022 jerseys ahead of their first matches of the season.

Goal of the Week

Sofia Huerta got her 2022 campaign off to a bang with a rocket from outside the box. Her goal was the first for OL Reign this season and helped them pick up a 1-1 draw against the Portland Thorns in their home opener at Lumen Field.ย 

 

Save of the Week

New team but still the same Kailen Sheridan. She made a terrific save to deny Christen Press a goal early on in the California derby. The match ended in a 1-1 tie for both squads’ first games in the NWSL.ย
