FootyPop: Barcelona Smashes Attendance Record at Camp Nou

This week, FC Barcelona took on Real Madrid at Camp Nou in a Champion’s league match that ended up breaking a world record. More Challenge Cup action went down, with the San Diego Wave earning their first win, and overall just a lot of great goals being scored. Unfortunately, the preseason injuries continue to pile up in the NWSL, especially among high-profile players. So, without further ado, here’s this week’s women’s soccer news.

High of the Week

FC Barcelona smashed the world record for the most-attended women’s club soccer game with 91,553 people in attendance at Camp Nou for their Champions League matchup against Real Madrid. Barcelona put on a show for the crowd as well, coming away with a 5-2 win to advance to the semifinals.

Low of the Week

It was a tough week for season-ending injuries in the NWSL. Marta announced that she suffered a knee injury against the North Carolina Courage, Tierna Davidson suffered a torn ACL in practice, and Lynn Williams will also be out for the season with a leg injury. The number of season-ending injuries before the regular season has even begun is staggering. It begs many questions about the scheduling of the NWSL season and if these players need more prolonged and more frequent breaks.

News of the Week

Angel City released their first away kits with the “Daylight” jerseys. The kits feature a terrific design of black, sol rosa, and white. They debuted the jerseys in Saturday afternoons game against San Diego.

Win of the Week

The San Diego Wave picked up their first win in club history against California foes Angel City FC in the Challenge Cup. San Diego looked impressive offensively, coming away with a 4-2 victory behind a brace from Alex Morgan. Jodie Taylor and rookie Amirah Ali scored the other two goals.

Save of the Week

Jane Campbell came up with a tough save on Arin Wright’s shot for the Houston Dash against the Chicago Red Stars.

Transfer of the Week

The Portland Thorns announced the signing of Canadian international Janine Beckie to a three-year deal. Beckie had been with Manchester City in the FA WSL since 2018. Before playing in England, the forward played with Sky Blue FC and the Houston Dash in the NWSL.

Fav Social Media Post

The NJ/NY Gotham FC players had some trouble naming the boroughs of New York.
