FootyPop: Orlando Pride Unveils Stunning New Luna Kit

This week in the women’s soccer world, there were some great kit reveals, more NWSL Challenge Cup action, and the UEFA Champions League semifinal matchups got underway, with FC Barcelona continuing to break records. Here’s this week’s women’s soccer news. 

 

High of the Week

As we inch closer to the start of the 2022 NWSL Regular season, clubs are still releasing new kits. This week both the Orlando Pride and Chicago Red Stars unveiled new jerseys for 2022. The Pride revealed their Luna kits inspired by NASA’s Artemis Luna Exploration Program. The Red Stars unveiled their Skyscraper kits, another nod to the city of Chicago. 

Racing Louisville is also set to unveil a new away kit on April 28!

 

Low of the Week

We’re just two weeks out from the Challenge Cup Championship game, but there’s been no official announcement about where the game will occur. The game is scheduled to be broadcast on CBS at 1:00 PM ET, so if it happens to take place on the west coast it could be a 10 AM kickoff time.

The Concacaf W Championship groups are set for the tournament in Monterrey, Mexico. The tournament will serve as 2023 Women’s World Cup qualifying and 2024 Summer Olympics qualifying and will be held July 4-18. Group A consists of the United States, Mexico, Jamaica, and Haiti, while Group B has Canada, Costa Rica, Panama, and Trinidad and Tobago. 

 

Win of the Week

The UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-finals got underway, with Barcelona picking up a statement 5-1 win over Wolfsburg. They picked up the commanding win in front of yet another world record crowd. The 91,648 in attendance at Camp Nou broke the record that Barcelona set in their quarter-final draw against Real Madrid. 

 

Goal of the Week

Malia Berkley tallied her first NWSL goal in style with a rocket from outside the box. Berkley intercepted the ball and blasted it into the top corner. The goal helped the North Carolina Courage pick up a 2-2 draw against the Washington Spirit. With the tie, the Courage was able to win the East Division and advance to the Challenge Cup semi-final. 

 

Social Media Post of the Week

Washington Spirit head coach, Kris Ward, sported the invest in women message on the sideline of the Spirit’s matchup against the Courage. Love to see it.
