FootyPop: USWNT Reaches Equal Pay Agreement!

It was a massive week in the world of women’s soccer. After a long time coming, the USWNT finally reached an equal pay agreement, there was more NWSL play, and a Champions League winner was crowned. Here’s this week’s women’s soccer news.

High of the Week

The equal pay movement has been a long-fought battle for the U.S. Women’s National Team and women’s soccer in general. This week, it took a huge step in the right direction when the USWNT announced that they had agreed to a new collective bargaining agreement that would guarantee them equal pay with the USMNT. It’s amazing to see the USWNT players finally getting what they deserve, and hopefully, we will see pay increases in women’s soccer as a whole.

Low of the Week

Chioma Ubogagu has been banned from soccer for nine months due to a substance violation. The Tottenham forward was taken acne medication that contained a banned substance, Canrenone. Unfortunately, while they ruled it was an innocent mistake, she still picked up a ban from the sport, meaning she can’t play or train.

News of the Week

During the NWSL midweek games, three different players hit career milestones. Carson Pickett made her 100th career regular-season appearance, Ashley Hatch scored her 30th career regular-season goal, and Amber Brooks reached 10,000 minutes played so far in her career.

Win of the Week

Olympique Lyonnais have been crowned the 2022 UEFA Women’s Champions League winners. Lyon defeated Barcelona 3-1 in the final. All four goals came in the first half, with Amandine Henry, Ada Hegerberg, and Catarina Macario finding the back of the net for the French club. It’s the club’s eighth Champions League win.
