A long weekend in the US means weโre bringing you the top weekend WoSo stories on Tuesday. Let us not forget the reason Americans had yesterday โoff.โ Here at Girls Soccer Network, we remember all those who gave their lives fighting for our freedom. We are grateful for their service and sacrifice.
In the world of womenโs soccer, we were blessed with another three days in a row of NWSL action. Plus, a huge game in France and several trophies snatched up around Europe. Letโs dive into the latest women’s soccer news.
The Courage Let Let Loose on Racing Louisville
Itโs not very often that the NC Courage have to wait three weekends into the season to get their first win, but thatโs just what the team has been dealing with in 2021. They dropped points against OL Reign and Orlando Pride.ย
However, on Friday, they got back to winning and did so in a big way. Paul Rileyโs team, welcoming back Sam Mewis, by the way, put 5 away against visiting Racing Louisville. Hailie Mace got a brace (ha), and Abby Erceg, Debinha, and Lynn Williams all got goals.
Signs of Ol’ Houston Dash Emerge in Win Over Chicago
Mal Pughโs early goal wasnโt enough for the Red Stars on their Saturday visit to BBVA Compass Stadium. A worldy of a goal from Nichelle Prince and a clutch strike from Kristie Mewis ensured the Dash got the comeback win and their first of the season, moving their record to 1-3.ย
Pride Stay Top, Rose Lavelle Is Back, and Thorns Find Their Form on a Jam-Packed Sunday
There was simply too much womenโs sports content on our TVs on Sunday, but hey, you wonโt ever find us complaining about that.
On Sunday, the Pride continued their rise as the leagueโs winningest team, beating Kansas City 1-0 thanks to a Marta goal. Had you told us the Pride would be top of the table to start off 2021, we simply would not have believed you. This has been fun to watch, though.
Elsewhere, the Washington Spirit grabbed a key road win in Washington, thanks to a Rapinoe own goal. Weโre used to seeing her on the scoresheet, but not like that. Another team who got a key road win this weekend? Portland. The Thorns have kinda been flailing this season, having lost two in a row. However, the team got an important three points against Gotham in New Jersey. If prettier goals counted for more, well, Crystal Dunnโs strike would be worth 10 points.ย
Domestic Cups Claimed in Spain, Italy, and Germany
You thought the menโs Champions League title was the only trophy in top-division European soccer on the line this weekend? Heavens no.
In Italy, AS Roma, playing just their second season in Serie A, claimed its first trophy on Sunday. After playing to a 0-0 draw in regulation and overtime, Roma beat Milan in PKs. Over in Germany, in the DFB-Pokal Cup, Wolfsburg beat Eintracht Frankfurt thanks to a last gasp overtime winner from Ewa Pajor in the 118th minute. And, in Spain, Barcelona did it. You bet they did it. They clinched the treble, picking up their third trophy of the season after a 4-2 win over Levante.
PSG Pick Up Crucial Point in Blockbuster Match Against Lyon
For months and months, PSG has been holding on to a razor-thin, one-point lead at the top of Division 1 Fรฉminine in the hopes of ending Lyonโs 14-year-reign as the Queens of France. On Sunday, they got even closer to that goal, holding Lyon to a scoreless draw. Thereโs just one game of the season left.ย
