FootyPop: The USWNT Is Gearing Up for the CONCACAF Championship!

This week was jam-packed with NWSL games, with some teams playing three games in the past week and a half! The USWNT is gearing up for a couple of friendly matches, which will lead right into the CONCACAF championship. Additionally, European countries came out with rosters for the Euros, which will start in July. So, without further ado, here’s this week’s women’s soccer news.

High of the Weekend

Germany, Belgium, and Spain’s men’s national teams are wearing their nation’s women’s Euros jerseys to show support for the women’s competition next month.

Germany’s men’s team wore the kit against England this past weekend to boost attention towards the German women’s team’s quest for a Euro championship trophy in England next month.

It’s great to see this unity between the men’s and women’s national teams, as last year, the women’s national teams sported the men’s kits to show support!

Low of the Weekend

A post shared by Orlando Pride (@orlpride)

This past week the Pride announced that head coach Amanda Cromwell and first assistant coach Sam Greene had been placed on temporary administrative leave pending an investigation into alleged retaliation.

Cromwell just started her job as the Pride’s head coach after leaving UCLA, where she coached from 2013 to 2021. Overall it seems like an odd situation, but the NWSL and NWSL Players Association are holding a joint investigation, and it’s been a year of reckoning for the league.

News of the Weekend

The USWNT 23-player roster was released earlier today! The preliminary roster cracked three pages, so it’s super exciting to see which players will be given a chance to prove themselves in the upcoming games this month and the CONCACAF championships next month. The roster seems to be a good mix between experienced veterans and young talent, which has been a big discussion lately.

The USWNT has recently suffered a plethora of injuries that will leave many familiar players out of play, such as Abby Dahlkemper, Catarina Macario, Lynn Williams, Sam Mewis, and Tierna Davidson.

Coach Andonovksi named three additional players, Carson Pickett, Sam Coffey, and Jaelin Howell, for training and the Colombia matches. Super excited to see Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe back in action, as well as Carson Pickett and Sam Coffey, who have never appeared for the team before!

Goal of the Weekend

Olivia Moultrie scored a goal for the Portland Thorns in Sunday’s win against the Houston Dash. The goal made her the youngest player to score in NWSL history at 16 years old.

Assist of the Weekend

Goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan assisted Alex Morgan in a goal for San Diego against OL Reign on Sunday. Sheridan fed Morgan with a long ball over the Reign’s back line, and Alex Morgan being Alex Morgan, calmly finished it off, making it look easy.

Player of the Weekend

Naomi Girma!! What a defensive star. Girma earned rookie of the month and NWSL best xi of the month. This is only the beginning for such a talented and level-headed player.

Transfer of the Weekend

With the transfer portal currently open, Cece Kizer and Addyson Merrick will be going to their hometown team, the KC Current.
