It’s an Olympic women’s soccer weekend sandwich! We started the weekend with some WoSo action in Japan and that’s how we’re ending it. By the time this FP is released, we’ll already know which two teams will have advanced to the Olympic final. Will it be an epic Sweden-US rematch in the gold medal game? Will Canada beat the US for the first time in 20 years? Will Australia best its own best performance in an Olympics by knocking out Sweden? I’m getting the jitters just thinking about all the possibilities. As for the meat (or uh, hummus) in that sandwich, NWSL action continued along with some preseason friendlies in England. Let’s dive into the latest women’s soccer news.
High of the Weekend

This play from Eugenie Le Sommer. It’s just—I don’t even know if there are words out there that do it justice. Magnifique!!!
Low of the Weekend
Alright well, this is a two-part low here, because they are different kinds of lows. Bear with me. First, just all the fan-frickin-tastic players that had to go home after Olympic losses on Friday. Formiga. Marta. Miedema. Devastating stuff.
hi we are in week 10 of the NWSL regular season and names are still being mispronounced
— Bethany Balcer (@bethanybalcer) July 31, 2021
But if we’re talking like low low—it’s gotta be the NWSL commentators butchering pronunciations of names. This stuff has got to stop. We are several months into season! This is your job!
News of the Weekend
Not to make us more stressed, but an amicus brief from the USMNT players' association just hit — in which they argue the #USWNT don't just deserve equal pay, they deserve better pay.

The US men’s national team spoke up about the equal pay debate and well, ya just gotta read it.
Player of the Weekend
Yell and argue with me all you want, but I gotta say, Ellen White. Doesn’t matter who the opponent is, doesn’t matter how her team as a whole is playing, White finds a way to do her job a.k.a. scoring goals. It’s incredibly inspiring. She scored a hat trick in her side’s loss to Australia on Friday and leaves Tokyo with six goals.
