This week, there was a ton of NWSL action. The season is charging on, and it’s exciting to see which teams look like they could advance to the playoffs. Additionally, an incredible matchup between the US and England was announced; there were some low points across the NWSL and NCAA, and more. Here’s this week’s women’s soccer news.
High of the Weekend
Truly Blessed to be back playing soccer again! I have missed the game so much ⚽️😃
— Crystal Dunn | Soubrier | (@Cdunn19) August 4, 2022
Crystal Dunn is back playing soccer after giving birth to her son! As one of the most versatile players in the league, it’ll be exciting to follow her return and see where she stands on the USWNT!
Lows of the Weekend
— Emily Madril (@emilymadril) August 6, 2022
Emily Madril, a rising star playing for Florida State University, just said that she would be forgoing her last year of NCAA eligibility to turn pro. Her reasoning was how the athletic department failed to consider players’ voices when searching for a new women’s soccer coach after coach Mark Krikorian left.
Sam Mewis has been placed on the team’s season-ending injury list (right leg) and will miss the remainder of the 2022 season, the team announced Friday.

Sam Mewis is officially out for the rest of the season. Sadly, the injury to her knee before transferring to Kansas City hasn’t improved, and she’s ruled out of playing.
News of the Weekend
The World Champs will be taking on the Euro champs this fall! A USWNT vs. England was just announced for October, and tickets sold out in just a few hours. Can’t wait to see these two teams battle it out!
Fail of the Weekend
This has to be acknowledged and is really important. Not because I want to call out one person but because it’s indicative of how our larger culture continues to perpetuate harmful stereotypes about Native Americans and Indigenous cultures. (1/3) pic.twitter.com/RGnKEdjGnW
— Madison Hammond (@gohaamm) August 2, 2022
This week, McCall Zerboni had a blunder when she remarked on Gotham FC’s play using offensive stereotypes about Native Americans. She and the team both came out with statements. But, things like this show us how important conversations about racism are, especially in the NWSL. Madison Hammond, the only Native American NWSL player, took the opportunity to share her point of view.
Team of the Weekend
Angel City has created the Player 22 Future Program, which provides resources to players after they stop playing professional soccer. Saskia Webber and Angela Hucles Mangano–both former USWNT stars–spoke about the program last week and how it aims to provide education and professional opportunities to retired NWSL players interested in continuing into a career in sports.
Win of the Weekend
The Current came up big this weekend with a 2-1 win over San Diego. The Wave is ranked number one in the NWSL, and the Current is steadily climbing the standings. They definitely look like a playoff contender.

Kailen Sheridan came up huge AGAIN for the Wave. The Current had the chance to score a third goal in a penalty kick, but Sheridan stopped that from happening.
