The 4 AM wake-ups are over, the medals have been bestowed, and we have officially said goodbye to the Tokyo 2020 women’s soccer tournament. And boy, what a tournament for women’s soccer it was. We saw:
- 101 goals scored (3.88 per match)
- Australia’s best-ever finish at a major tournament
- The debut of Zambia and the emergence of Barba Banda as a household WoSo name
- A mind-boggling 10 goals for Vivianne Miedema
- Christine Sinclair, one of the sport’s GOATs, winning her first major international trophy
There’s way more I’m missing, no doubt, but alas, this is merely an overview. After the tournament closed out on Thursday, the NWSL sans Olympians continued action and preseason games got underway in Europe (among other things…). So, without further ado, let’s dive into women’s soccer news.

Syd Leroux’s league-leading seventh goal of the season. Watching how Leroux plays would make anyone want to run through a wall—the passion, the determination, the GRIT. Off the field, Leroux has been going through some hard personal stuff and seeing her shine for the Pride as she did against Chicago yesterday has just been so sweet.

The racist Juventus post. Disgraceful. People need to be held accountable.
