There was plenty of WoSo action this past week. Both The Women’s Cup and the Women’s International Champions Cup named their winners, and there was more NWSL action–and chaos. Since it’s already nearing the end of August, we’re starting to get a feel for some playoff contenders (*eyes Kansas City*). Additionally, the UEFA Women’s Champions League got underway. So, to sum up the past week, here’s this week’s women’s soccer news.
High of the Weekend
It was a special time for the OL fam this weekend! The Women’s Cup and the Women’s International Champions Cup concluded this weekend. OL Reign beat Racing Louisville 2-1 to take the Women’s Cup trophy, and Olympique Lyonnais beat C.F. Monterrey 4-0 to win the ICC.
Low of the Weekend
Sadly, the under-20 WYNT’s run in the World Cup has ended. The team lost 3-1 to Japan on Wednesday, so they didn’t make it out of the group stage.
The semifinals will take place on Thursday, August 25. Spain will play the Netherlands, and Brazil will play Japan. The tournament will conclude on Sunday, August 28.

Round 1 of the UWCL took place! Real Madrid knocked out Man City, who boasts a handful of Euro 2022 champions, and Ajax knocked out Frankfurt, who’ve won the UWCL four times. These matches are just getting us more and more excited for the European leagues to kick off.
Goal of the Weekend

Alex Morgan scored the Wave’s first goal in their win against Houston. The goal was special because it marked Morgan’s 50th regular season goal!

Lindsey Horan went on a scoring streak in Portland. She scored twice in Lyon’s 4-0 win over C.F. Monterrey to name them ICC champs.
Assist of the Weekend
Jordyn Huitema makes it 2-1! What a finish from the striker. 💥
The ball from Jimena López though. 🥶 pic.twitter.com/VFLS8rL5ok

Jimena Lopez of the OL Reign takes the cake for best assist this week. What a perfectly weighted and paced ball into Jordyn Huitema. The Reign deserved the lead for that one.
Upset of the Weekend
That'll do 😌#NCvCHI | #CourageUnitesUs pic.twitter.com/QLhJgUNijY
— NC Courage (@TheNCCourage) August 21, 2022
The North Carolina Courage has a big question mark over its head this season as they continue to have success up top but also concede a ton of goals. However, this week the tides turned for the Courage as they beat the Red Stars 4-0. Definitely a little shocked to see the Courage keep a clean sheet.
On a side note, congrats to Diana Ordoñez for the brace and scoring a goal for five games in a row!
Transfer of the Weekend
In quite a big move, Gotham FC’s Caprice Dydasco is headed to Houston in exchange for allocation money. Houston will certainly be excited to gain Dydasco, last season’s NWSL Defender of the Year.
