FootyPop: NWSL Rattled By Late Sunday Night News

This weekend was too much. It was just TOO MUCH. And I mean this in the best way possible because we witnessed two—I repeat, two—tournaments that featured NWSL teams facing off against Europe’s best teams. This has never happened before in the history of women’s soccer. Ever.

The games were entertaining and dramatic. There was a PK shoot-out. Some goals and saves will be the inspiration for movies and/or tattoos someday. Oh, did I mention there was also just the casual first round of Women’s Champions League play this weekend? Also, some banger NWSL regular-season games? I repeat: this weekend was too much, and I’d die the happiest of WoSo fans if every one of them were like this. So, let’s dive into women’s soccer news.

These tournaments taking place. It’s an incredible and important experience for the players to play against the best of the best. It’s an incredible and important experience for the fans to see the best of the best. This is a big way the game continues to grow—attention-wise and skill-wise!

Fail of the Weekend

ESPN had the rights to the Women’s International Champions Cup and pretty much had zero social strategies for the tournament. There were so many incredible highlights, and ESPN and ESPN FC shared none of those highlights.

Player of the Weekend

Katie Lund. Get a load of this. Lund came off the bench for Racing Louisville FC in the Women’s Cup final. The game was her professional debut—no biggie. The game goes into PKs. Shoot out is incredibly chaotic—misses and makes galore. Lund steps up to take the 11th PK in the shootout. Buries it. Then, it’s Bayern’s turn to kick. They need to score to keep the game alive. NOPE! DENIED BY KATIE LUND. Louisville wins. Wow.

News of the Weekend

Announced late on August 22, Gotham FC coach Freya Coombe has been named the new head coach of Angel City! Angel City FC will make its NWSL debut in 2022.
