FootyPop: OL Reign and Ashlyn Harris Both Break NWSL Records

Funny how I thought last weekend was filled to the brim with WoSo content. We pushin’ that brim a level higher in this final weekend of August. A coach’s goodbye to her team, an Erika Tymrak worldy, a Houston transfer, a Pinoe-lty, someone. stop. me. we’re. not. even. in. the body. of. the. newsletter. yet. ok. Let’s dive into women’s soccer news.

High of the Weekend

On Sunday, the Reign played its first-ever game at Lumen Field in the first-ever Reign-Sounders doubleheader. And it only makes sense that this ~first ever~ occasion was marked by the most heated rivalry in the league. Yup, Seattle welcomed Portland on the big day and beat them 2-1. A brace from Megan Rapinoe put OL Reign ahead, including yet another powerful penalty kick. Even more exciting, the match broke the record for attendance of an NWSL game at 27,278 attendees.

Fail of the Weekend

Problematic former Washington Spirit coach Tom Torres was announced as the new coach of USL W League team Northern Virginia FC on Friday.

Player of the Weekend

Ashlyn Harris recorded her 469th career save in Orlando’s 1-0 win over Gotham this weekend. That save moved her to the top of the NWSL’s All-Time Saves Leader list. But, honestly, while we’re talking keepers. Shout out to AD Franch for her 300th career save in Kansas City’s 3-0 loss to Chicago on Saturday.

Transfer of the Weekend

Abby Dahlkemper just got traded to the Houston Dash from the Courage for $25,000 in allocation money.

News of the Weekend

In light of investigations and general concerns about verbal abuse, racism, and lack of protecting players, this banner was shown off at the Washington Spirit game on Sunday. Security told them to take it down, but then this chant started.
