FootyPop: Hot Off The Press, The USWNT’s New Kits!

This week was full of exciting upsets, spectacular wins, a handful of great goals, and a new look for the USWNT. Read on to learn more about this week’s women’s soccer news.

High of the Weekend

Jaedyn Shaw scored the winning and the only goal in San Diego’s 1-0 match against their biggest rival, Angel City FC. The Wave captured the W and a record-setting crowd with 32,000 in attendance–the biggest pro women’s soccer crowd since 2001.

San Diego is having an extraordinary season, and if nothing else, they bested ACFC on their home-opener at Snapdragon with 17-year-old Shaw putting away the header.

Low of the Weekend

The NWSL announced Amber Brooks would be fined and suspended for a game due to her misconduct during the Spirit’s game against San Diego earlier this month. Additionally, she’s suspended for another game because of an accumulation of yellow cards. Her foul against Alex Morgan was pretty atrocious, and not sure why she showed that level of aggressiveness towards the ref.

News of the Weekend

The USWNT put out some new threads! I’ve seen some mixed responses about the badge placement, but overall, the team will rock the new look.

Win of the Weekend

In the first week of FA WSL play, Liverpool upset reigning WSL champions Chelsea 2-1. Liverpool is newly promoted up to the FA WSL, so it’ll be exciting what they can show this season.

Goal of the Weekend

Watch this absurd goal from Arizona. It’s a miracle how she manages to volley the ball when lying on the ground to chip the keeper.

Player of the Weekend

Mallory Pugh scored a brace in the Chicago Red Stars’ 4-0 trampling of Kansas City. Chicago is having another incredible season, and we definitely have our eye on them for championship contention. Pugh looks like she’s running at 2x speed on the field. We could watch her double-meg run for days.

Upset of the Weekend

No. 7 Virginia beat No.2 UNC 3-2 last week, becoming the first team ever to come back from a two-goal deficit against the Tar Heels. It’s also the first time Virginia has beat UNC since 2014!
