The Washington Spirit had a season full of ups and downs but things turned around for them on the field after Kris Ward took over as the interim head coach. The Spirit went undefeated on their run to being crowned 2021 NWSL Champions. With what he was able to do both on the field and off the field for the players it was obvious he should become the permanent head coach.

After playing to a 2-2 tie in the first leg, Tigres and Monterrey again found themselves at a stalemate through 90 minutes. The Liga MX Final came down to penalty kicks with Monterrey winning 3-1. It was a terrific environment for the final in front of a sold-out crowd in Estadio Universitario.
