7 Things You Should Know about Lynn Williams

Anyone who closely follows women’s soccer knows that Lynn Williams was and is an absolute star on the field. Even though she wasn’t on the 2019 U.S. Women’s National Team during the World Cup season, there still aren’t many American women’s soccer players who can come close to her kind of skill and finesse.

So if you missed her last year, we completely understand! And off the field, Williams herself is a pretty interesting person. We’ve even compiled the top seven things you should know about the soccer player to truly call yourself a fan!

She officially plays for the North Carolina Courage

Williams is a forward for the North Carolina Courage (which was originally named the Western New York Flash before it got sold off in 2017). In her first season with the team in 2015, Williams scored four goals over her 17 appearances on the field. And her success rate has only gone up as the seasons have gone on.

She became a true star for the team when she scored 11 goals over the 2016 season, for which she was awarded the Golden Boot

And has played on the W-League Western Sydney Wanderers

Although she is officially on the roster for the North Carolina Courage, as part of the 2019-2020 W-League season, Williams was on loan to the Western Sydney Wanderers. And it looks like she loved her time living down under!

However, after breaking onto the USWNT roster earlier this year for training camp and the recent CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying tournament, Lynn terminated the remainder of her Wanderers contract to focus on her career with the ladies of the Red, White, and Blue.

Her amazing 2016 season got her called into the big leagues

Williams has been a star since the beginning of her professional career, and in just her second season in the NWSL, she was asked to join the USWNT to play against Switzerland. She subbed in during the second half of the game and scored a goal just 49 seconds after entering the game — a record only broken days later by Kealia Ohai.

Williams is a Pepperdine University alum

Williams attended the California university from 2011 to 2014, and she played on the Waves during her tenure there. She was so good even as a freshman that she started in all 20 games and finished the season as third on the entire team!

She set a lot of records as a college student

In addition to starting in every game as a freshman college student, Williams also went on to win a handful of titles and break several records as a college soccer player. She was named West Coast Conference’s Freshman of the Year, and she earned honors for the following: Soccer America Freshman All-American, NSCAA All-West Region second team, All-WCC second team, and WCC All-Freshman team. Williams was named the National Player of the Week by the NSCAA as well as the WCC Player of the Week for scoring a game-winning goal against Wright State University and then for her work against Texas A&M. She alone also helped the team get to a third Sweet 16 appearance in the entire program’s history.

She was heartbroken about her USWNT absence

After a killer few seasons as a professional, many (including Williams) were wondering why she wasn’t a starting player for the 2019 World Cup. She told The Equalizer: “When you’re not getting called in but you’re still allocated, you think there’s still hope…When I got that notice, I took a moment and was upset, then brushed it off like, ‘Whatever, it’s fine.’ I was in denial.”

However, just a few weeks later, she still wasn’t taking it well. But a solid conditioning session with her boyfriend really helped her get through the pain. She said, “After that, I put it behind me and thought, you know what, I do this because I love it and I’m not going to feel sorry for myself anymore.”

She has a boyfriend

Like any celebrity that you’re a fan of, you want to know a little bit about their personal life! Williams superfans are no different. For anyone curious about her dating life, the soccer star is currently seeing Marley, an Australian basketball player. The pair are super cute together, as evidenced by their adorable Instagram posts.
