A Guide to Self-Reflection at the End of the Year

We all want to reach elusive success in our lives. But what is the definition of success? The definition of success is: “the accomplishment of an aim or purpose”.

Therefore, you must have an aim or goal to reach success. As we self-reflect at the end of this year, we will all think, “Have I been successful?”  Make sure when you’re thinking that you’re measuring your own success in relation to the goals you set for yourself–not society’s definition of success, not your parent’s definition of success, and not your best friend’s definition of success–YOURS.

It’s important to set goals for different aspects of your life, such as fitness, soccer, school, work/career, finances, family, and anything else you deem important to you. And you work towards those goals because they’re leading you to a bigger purpose for your life–not because society says you should.

So what does self-reflection look like at the end of the year? It looks like finding ways to maintain peace. It looks like not getting caught up with the holidays, the partying, the socialization, the New Year’s excitement, and some time into your own space of quiet reflection with a notebook and a pen.

Self-reflection is defined as “meditation or serious thought about one’s character, actions, and motives”.

Here are three techniques of self-reflection at the end of the year.

  1. Revisiting last year’s goals and recalculating what didn’t get accomplished, why, and how that goal might be redirected. This is an excellent time to check in on that vision board you created for 2022.
  2. Taking time to visualize and meditate with your eyes closed on what your ideal upcoming year will look like. Followed by writing it down in a notebook or on a Google Doc. Don’t forget to print this out and hang it up where you could see it.
  3. Making sure you let go of any negative feelings or resentments from the previous year so that you have a clean slate of thought and intention for the upcoming year. You don’t want to carry old baggage into the following year. It’s okay to feel the emotions of the past year and let them go.

When it comes to being a Soccerrista, it’s essential to know your strengths and weaknesses so that you know what your focus will be on going into the next year. Creating intention starts now. It doesn’t have to start on January 1st. You could take a day or a couple of days to reflect.

Empty yourself of the year before. Write out what goals you reached and what goals you’ll be carrying into the following year. It’s okay to recalibrate, to drop any previous goals you’ve outgrown, and to move forward after self-reflection with confidence.
