Former Women’s Soccer Players Turned Coaches

The old saying is those who can’t do, teach. But what about the coaches who have done terrific things in the game and are now choosing to spread that skill and wisdom around? Let’s take a look at some former players who are now coaching around the world. 

 

Briana Scurry

Briana Scurry is an unforgettable name in the legacy of the USWNT. She was the keeper for the 1999 FIFA World Cup and has plenty of Olympic medals under her belt. She was on the USWNT from 1994 until 2008 and was a founding member and player of the WUSA. In 2011 she was named general manager of magicJack of the WPS, and in 2018, she served as the assistant manager of the Washington Spirit. 

 

Pia Sundhage

Pia Sundhage is best known to people in the States as a former coach of the USWNT. Sundhage was at one point in the running for Player of the Century. With nearly 150 caps for the Swedish National Team and plenty of club wins, Sundhage began her coaching career in 1992 while she was still a player. Sundhage has now coached three of the best national programs in the world: the USA, Sweden, and Brazil.  

 

Casey Stoney

Casey Stoney, former team captain of the England National Team and Team GB, is now the head coach for the freshly minted San Diego Wave. San Diego Wave had a thrilling first season under her leadership, taking third in the league table. Stoney was named Coach of the Year, and two of her players, Alex Morgan and Kailen Sheridan, were awarded Golden Boot and Keeper of the Year, respectively. 

 

Brandi Chastain

Brandi Chastain is one of the most iconic and well-known players of the USWNT. She worked as a volunteer assistant coach for the Santa Clara Broncos and assisted the head coach at Bellarmine College Preparatory. Chastain also has her eyes set on working with U.S. Soccer. She said she would love to lead the USWNT in the future on a podcast hosted by Midge Purce.

 

Amy Rodriguez

Amy Rodriguez is the head coach for the reboot of the Utah Royals, set to begin its NWSL journey next season. Rodriguez retired from play in 2022 and immediately picked up coaching, serving first as the assistant coach for USC, her alma mater. We’re looking forward to seeing how Rodriguez and this version of the Royals fair in their upcoming season. 

 

Tiffany Roberts Sahaydak

Tiffany Roberts Sahaydak, a member of the USWNT from 1994 to 2004, is another 1999 FIFA winner turned coach. Roberts Sahaydak currently holds down two coaching positions, head coach for the UCF Knights and assistant coach for the USWNT. We love getting to see a player with over 100 caps for the program spreading that wisdom around to the next generation. 

 

Sonia Bompastor

Sonia Bompastor is a former player for and current manager of Olympique Lyonnais. Bompastor won tons of titles with Lyon, including the French Cup, Champions League, and the league title. In fact, she is the first person to win the Champions League as both player and coach.

 

Martina Voss-Tecklenburg

Martina Voss-Tecklenburg is the current manager for Germany and a former player for the team. She played in three World Cups, five UEFA Championships, and an Olympic Games. Before coming back to the German National Team Voss-Tecklenburg was the coach who led Switzerland to their first-ever World Cup in 2019.
