FootyPop: Julie Ertz is Back in Action for the USWNT!

This week was a whirlwind. We received the USWNT roster for the upcoming friendlies with a pleasant surprise in the inclusion of Julie Ertz, watched the second-weekend NWSL action with some great goals and saves, and heard some not-so-great news about one team in particular. So, without further ado, here’s this week’s women’s soccer news.

High of the Weekend

JULIE ERTZ! She is back! After a long hiatus due to injury and pregnancy, Coach Andonovski included her on the USWNT’s roster for its upcoming friendlies against Ireland.

The 30-year-old is still figuring out her situation with an NWSL team but has been practicing with an MLS Academy team. We’re stoked to see Ertz back in action and hopefully dominating the midfield again for the United States!

Low of the Weekend

The mother of NWSL draftee Mykiaa Minniss came out with a statement about how the Kansas City Current treated her daughter, and it’s quite alarming.

No player should go through what Minniss did or have their love for the game diminished. All we can do is hope that the NWSL will get to the bottom of this and make sure that this doesn’t happen again.

News of the Weekend

Another win for women! Nike is releasing new shorts with revolutionary leak-proof technology–meaning no more stressing when players are on their periods! Nike is making the shorts available for all their teams in the Women’s World Cup.

Additionally, the USWNT released its new kits for the World Cup… which are about equally as controversial as the last kit drop. The away kit is nice, but the home kit is what got fans riled up. It features a blue splatter paint pattern. Good thing our fav USWNT players can rock anything!

Fail of the Weekend

This video is just an oof. Arsenal’s Katie McCabe received a yellow card after Chloe Kelly stepped up to her to delay her throw-in, and McCabe bonked her in the head with the ball.

Save of the Weekend

Anna Moorehouse had a nice game against Angel City. She came up huge twice for the team, one was a PK save, and the other was an incredible tip of the ball over the bar.

If not for Moorehouse, Orlando might have been down more than just one goal at the end of the match.

Goal of the Weekend

Racing Louisville was down 2-0 to Washington Spirit before half. But whatever plan they cooked up during halftime worked exactly as planned. Ary Borges hit this unreal strike to tie the game. The way the ball curves into the upper corner is INSANE. Can’t wait to see more from her this season.

Assist of the Weekend

Yes, this goal might give our goal of the weekend above a run for its money. But what we’re really focused on is Liah Williamson’s filthy backheel assist to Frida Manuum.

Player of the Weekend

Jess Fishlock scored in OL Reign’s match against Gotham FC, which makes her the first player to score in all ten NWSL regular seasons!

We also have to honor Lynn Williams in this category. First, Williams is running around in what looks like the world’s most uncomfortable arm brace, and next, she loses a boot! Nevertheless, Williams powered through and performed well.

What to Look Forward To

Saturday, April 8: USWNT vs. Ireland at 2:30 PM ET/11:30 AM PT

Tuesday, April 11: USWNT vs. Ireland at 7:30 PM ET/4:30 PM PT

Fav Social Media Post of the Weekend

France announced a new head coach in Herve Renard after they sacked Corinne Diacre. Renards first big move was setting the roster for the international break, and he called in star defender Wendie Renard after she stepped away because of the team’s leadership under Diacre! It’s great to see the French national team head in a better direction.
