13 Things You Should Know About Tobin Heath

Tobin Heath is an incredible and talented soccer player who plays outside forward for the USWNT, as well as the Portland Thorns FC. Every time she’s on the field, Tobin plays the game with so much passion. After all, she prefers to nutmeg her opponents rather than dribbling around them.

But off-the field the game-changing athlete is pretty mysterious. Here are a few things you didn’t know about Tobin Heath.

She’s an Artist

Tobin’s not only creative on the field, she thinks outside the box in her everyday life as well. What drives her seems to be a quest for self-enlightenment and personal progress, rather than an all out desire to just win. It’s what makes her an interesting athlete and human.

She’s a co-founder for Re-Inc

Tobin, along with Christen Press, Meghan Klingenberg, and Megan Rapinoe, all are the CEOs of the gender-neutral clothing brand Re-Inc. In 2019, the four created the non-binary brand to help create inclusive clothing and products. The brand also nods to the athletes’ struggle to be treated the same as their male counterparts in the U.S.

Family First

Tobin is very close to her family. She has two older sisters, Perry and Katie, and one younger brother, Jeffrey. Her privilege has not made her indifferent to the lives of others, rather it’s given her the stage to share her empathetic nature to a greater audience.

Her spirituality Grounds Her

Raised in a Christian household, Tobin has regularly credited Jesus with her success. But it’s not your “typical” church on Sunday type of relationship with religion. Rather, her faith evolved into something is deep and personal, and not something she imposes on others.

Favorite Foods

It was stated in her college soccer bio that Eggo Waffles are one of her favorite things to eat. But Tobin’s favorite pre-game snack is a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

She’s an outdoorsy person

She loves spending time outdoors. Nothing can compare to her love for soccer, but the skillful player has mentioned that she enjoys playing many other sports. Tobin enjoys all kinds of sports like skateboarding, tennis and surfing to name a few.

She started soccer at a young age

Heath’s parents didn’t know much about soccer, but that didn’t stop them from letting her play. She was 4 years old when she first kicked a ball at her local YMCA. She played with boy and girls, and her parents saw how feisty and aggressive she was. Since then, Tobin never stopped playing the sport she loves.

She loved Brazilian soccer

In Tobin’s teenage years, she grew a love for Brazilian soccer. Her favorite player was the nation’s biggest star, Ronaldinho.

Her nicknames are always changing

Since she was four, she loved soccer and everyone around knew it. Her nickname was “soccer junkie” because it’s all see ever wanted to do. When she’s around Allie Long, her nickname is “Harry.” The two call each other Harry, and don’t remember how the nickname came to be. Now she’s better known as the “Nutmeg Queen,” or what her teammates call her “Tobs.”

She’s played European soccer

In 2013, Heath signed a six-month contract with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). She played on the top tier French league, Division 1 Féminine until the end of the season. Soon after, she joined the Portland Thorns in July 2013.

She did incredible in the Olympics

Heath was a part of the gold medal-winning teams in 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympic games. During the Rio Olympics in 2016, she was voted ‘NWSL Olympics Player of Match’ twice in a row by fans. She won for day 1 and day 2.

She loved dorm-life

While Tobin was in college, she loved dorm life. She enjoyed the communal living and did not want to leave that kind of environment. She eventually moved to a house off-campus with friends and lived in the attic with three friends. Heath discovered her love and affection for friendship-living.

She’s a free-spirit

At one point, Heath would become the National Team’s vagabond. For years she would crash on the couches of different friends or family members’ houses. She would prefer to be a drifter, drifting from place to place while visiting family and friends around the world.
