College Recruitment Tips

The school year (and more importantly soccer season) hasn’t even started, but for junior and senior soccer players that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be thinking ahead. The girls soccer lifestyle never waits!

For those interested in continuing their soccer career into the collegiate league, your recruitment journey is just starting. Here are some tips to make sure you have the best process possible. Here are five important college recruitment tips for you.

Know where you want to play. And where you can play

The first step in the college recruiting process is deciding on what schools interest you both in terms of their women’s soccer program, their academic offerings, and their campus culture (because as much as we love the sport, it should not be the one deciding factor in a college decision).

Once you have your list, you have to make sure you’re setting reasonable goals. Let’s be honest, not everyone is going to be able to play for the TOP team in the division. Plus, these next four years are only an opportunity to grow. Make sure where you’re looking to play is attainable for your skill.

Create an athletic and academic resume.

Think of applying to be recruited as an experience comparable to applying for a job. You need a resume that quickly but impressively lists all of your accomplishments both academic and athletics based for them to see. This should include academic status and rewards, you athletic statistics and notable accomplishments, your highlight video link, and a reference for your coach.

Be professional

Make sure when you’re contacting coaches whose programs you’d like to belong to that you are as professional as possible. That means being courteous, as well as making sure there are no spelling or grammatical errors in whatever you’re sending out.

Stay organized

There’s a lot going on in your life between school, soccer, and this recruitment process. Keep a running spreadsheet and additional documents keeping track of your timeline as well as any contacts you’ve already made.

Take responsibility

This is your recruitment journey. It’s your responsibility to take responsibility for everything that happens or doesn’t happen from this moment forward.

Hopefully you’ll find these tips helpful for the upcoming college recruitment.
