USWNT vs Canada Preview – CONCACAF Women’s Championship Final

The USWNT vs Canada: two great soccer nations that don’t like each other when they step on the pitch. There might be mutual respect but believe that for those 90 minutes, no one will be friendly with each other. This rings true, especially after Canada has the last win between both sides–a 1-0 win in the Olympic Semifinal.

Neither side has conceded a goal so far this tournament, which makes this matchup even more exciting. Both countries are playing some outstanding soccer right now, with a spot in the 2024 Olympics on the line. Here’s an in-depth preview of how things could go during the USWNT vs Canada match

USWNT vs Canada Match Preview

While Canada won the last matchup when it mattered the most, the USWNT has dominated the Canadians in the last three CONCACAF Championship Finals. The Americans have won by a combined total of 9-0 in those matches, and many will expect the USWNT to do the same thing once again. However, parts of this roster represent a different generation of players for the USWNT who haven’t been in a spot like this. As a result, there’s a tremendous amount of intrigue here as to how things might go.

Will Canada come out and defend as they have in the past, or will they look to attack the Americans? The USWNT only beat Canada 1-0 in the SheBelieves Cup last year, which means the defensive strategy might be the best way for Canada. The Canadians have a ton of options offensively at their disposal. Deanne Rose, Jordyn Huitema, and Adrianna Leon could pose problems later in the match if the Canadians have the match at 0-0 into the second half or if they’re trailing by a goal or two.

The Americans naturally will come out and try to score early and suck the life out of the Canadians if they can. This is a revenge game for them, after all. Alex Morgan, Mallory Pugh, Ashley Sanchez, and Rose Lavelle are in a rich run of form right now, making them a tough prospect for any defense in the world to try and stop. In addition, the USWNT Starting XI has been a little more attack-minded, with Sofia Huerta able to create from right back, and Emily Sonnett managed to score her first ever USWNT goal in their last match.

There are so many great matchups in the midfield as well. Thorns teammates clash as Lindsay Horan and Christine Sinclair will go toe-to-toe, and Andi Sullivan and Jessie Fleming both will be huge in defense and connecting back to front. While Janine Beckie is a key player for the Canadians in attack, Desiree Scott and Sophie Schmidt will be x-factors. If they can make the game ugly by getting physical with the USWNT, similar to how Mexico did, they’ll have a really good chance to win the game. Overall, this must-see TV on Monday, July 18 at 10:00 PM ET/7:00 PM PT with Paramount+ covering the game, you won’t want to miss how the drama unfolds.
