FootyPop: A Blue Manchester, a Trophy for Barcelona and a Beautiful Gesture from a Women’s Soccer Power Couple

Telling and showing the people in your life you love them is what Valentine’s Day is all about. So, coming off the spirit of February 14th, let me just express how we feel here at GSN. We love your commitment to women’s soccer. Your comments, “likes”, shares, and feedback. We love that you’re on this journey to grow the beautiful game. And, of course, we love that you’re here on Mondays to read the top women’s soccer news of the weekend. So, let’s dive in.

The Citizens earned bragging rights Friday night after beating crosstown rivals Manchester United 3-0. It’s a relatively new derby in women’s soccer, but it’s one that is quickly heating up as these sides boast two of the most talented rosters in the world.

City dominated Friday’s derby, holding the advantage in shots, possession percentage, and passes completed. Goals from Lucy Bronze, Lauren Hemp, and Caroline Weir sealed their victory at Manchester City Academy Stadium. The goal from Weir, I’ll go ahead and say it, was one of the finest you’ll ever see.

Sam Mewis Won’t Be at the SheBelieves Cup

Speaking of Manchester City, on Saturday, we got word the team’s most beloved 6-foot, American midfielder will not be joining the USWNT for the upcoming SheBelieves Cup. Sam Mewis is staying in England to rehab her ankle and has been replaced on the roster by Jaelin Howell.

Of course, we’re happy for Howell. However, we’re sad the Mewis sisters won’t be on the field together for the USWNT.

Sky Blue, Boston Breakers Named in Fraud Case

In more contentious women’s soccer news, two NWSL teams, Sky Blue and the former Boston Breakers, were implicated in a case of visa fraud on Friday in the Massachusetts District Court. To break down how the teams were involved in laypeople’s terms, I highly suggest you listen to this bit from Meg Linehan.

The Catalan giants added yet another trophy to their growing trophy case on Saturday, beating Logroño 3-0 in the Copa de La Reina final. Alexia Putellas, Aitana Bonmati, and Jennifer Hermoso scored goals that helped clinch the big win at the La Rosaleda Stadium.

Pernille Harder and Magdalena Ericsson MadeUs Cry in the Best Way Possible

Alright, if you’re looking for a couple to stan, Magdalena Ericson and Pernille Harder are it. Not only are they, like, really good at soccer (both currently play for Chelsea), but they’re also incredibly generous and outspoken about LGBTQ+ rights. On Valentine’s Day yesterday, the Scandinavian power couple opened up their DMS to anybody who might be looking to chat about the struggles of being LGBTQ.
