It was a crazy week in the women’s soccer world with the College Cup final, a ton of NWSL trade news, and the UEFA Champions League competition. Here’s a look at this week’s women’s soccer news.

High of the Weekend

Florida State defeated BYU for their third national championship. The match was still tied 0-0 after 120 minutes, but the Seminoles won in penalty kicks. Florida State now has the second-most NCAA titles, finishing first place in 2014, 2018, and this year.

Low of the Weekend

Racing Louisville’s case of mistaken identity with Jorian Baucom’s thank you graphic… seriously? Instead of being a picture of Baucom, it was her teammate Ebony Salmon. Baucom expressed that this wasn’t the first time, which isn’t surprising considering it seems like this kind of thing happens far too frequently in the NWSL.

News of the Weekend

Racing Louisville found their head coach in Kim Bjรถrkegren! The Swedish international comes to Louisville after most recently coaching Cyprus’ Apollon Ladies FC. A handful of teams were left head-coachless at the end of this season, so it’s been interesting to see the coaching choices moving forward.

Ada Hegerberg scored twice in Lyon’s 5-0 win over Benfica, giving her 51 goals in UEFA Champions League Competition. Lyon’s star continues to break records, this time becoming the first to score 50 goals for a single club in the competition.

Reading FC beat Chelsea for the first time, handing the defending champions a 1-0 loss. In the third minute of the match, Deanna Rose got the winner, leading Reading to all three points.

Transfer of the Weekend

With the NWSL Expansion Draft drawing near, we’ve seen a lot of player movement. The week’s biggest move was Ashlyn Harris and Ali Krieger joining NJ/NY Gotham FC.

Angel City also acquired Tyler Lussi, Simone Charley, Cari Roccaro, and Didi Haracic. Additionally, Brianna Pinto is heading to the North Carolina Courage, and San Diego acquired Angharad James from the Courage.

Save of the Weekend

Maybe it’s not a goalkeeper’s save, but this is definitely the save of the week. After a pitch invader disrupted Chelsea’s Champions League match against Juventus, Sam Kerr took matters into her own hands. After the intruder ran onto the field with security doing nothing, Kerr body checked him, which then led to security getting the man off the field. The referee ended up handing Kerr a yellow card; whether she deserved it or not, it was an awesome moment from Sam Kerr.

What to Look Forward To

The NWSL Expansion Draft and the 2022 Draft are both this week. The Expansion Draft is on Thursday, December 16, at 7:00 PM ET. The NWSL Draft will occur on Saturday, December 18, at 2:00 PM ET.

A handful of teams are protected from the Expansion Draft due to trades earlier this month. Nonetheless, it’ll be great to see how Angel City FC and San Diego build out their teams.
